This "mysterious cross" is a large wooden cross planted in the middle of a platform. The subject (a man) is tied to the cross by means of a large rope; the curtains surrounding the platform are drawn for a short time and when they are reopened, the assistant is replaced by an assistant held by the same ties in the same place. The curtains are drawn a second time. At the new opening, the rope is on the ground, at the foot of the cross, on one side is the man, on the other, the woman. This last effect is intended to destroy the explanation that some spectators might give, namely: the woman dressed as a man and who would have got rid of her first costume.
