On the stage is a sort of richly decorated piedestral, hardly higher than a pedestal table. From the hanger comes a cable down which the magician hangs the handle of a giant lantern that was folded into the pedestal. The cable rises, the lantern unfolds, its base still fixed on top of the pedestal.
When the pistol is fired, it falls back onto its support, but we see a "beautiful young girl" hanging from the cable, swinging on a flowery escarpolette.
Escarpolette : n.c., a seat or board suspended by two ropes on which one is placed to swing.
